• 耳石是硬骨魚類協調運動平衡及聽覺的霰石結晶體。除了是時間及環境的記錄器外，耳石形態具有種的專一性，可當做魚種的鑑定依據，廣泛被應用在系統分類、漁業生物、攝食生態、古生物及考古學等研究領域。本研究建置台灣水域初步近四百種魚類耳石之典藏，以提升全球魚類耳石種數在印度西太平洋地區的多樣性。
• Otoliths are aragonite crystals which control balance of movement and the sense of hearing in teleost fish species. Aside from serving as a means of recording the life-spans and living habitats of fish species, the shapes of otoliths are also species specific. Otoliths can thus be used to discriminate between fish species, and are also more widely used in research involving systematic classification, fishery biology, feeding ecology, paleontology, and archaeology. This research project has established a preliminary archive of otoliths of 400 fish species living in Taiwan waters as a means by which to increase the amount of otoliths known worldwide through the wide variety of those contained in the Indo-West Pacific region.
